Music

“Music is the healing force of the world. It’s understood by every man, woman, boy and girl. And that’s why, I love music.” The O’Jays.  Recently, during one of several June birthday celebrations featuring Allysen’s homemade-from-scratch pound cake served with Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla Swiss Almond Haagen-Dazs ice cream, I played loud and proud, “I Love Music”. It’s one of my fave-rave old-school vintage jams by the O’Jays. This particular jam starts with a classic bongo drum beat before the 3 iconic legends share the harmonic melody. Listening to the harmony created by the O’Jays’ voices, and many other talented musicians is always a transformational experience for me. Music is powerful and magical in its ability to transcend time and space. Singing, dancing and celebrating with music is an essential part of my life. Music is present at every gathering of family and friends. WHY? I love music!

As children and adults, we attended concerts featuring a variety of famous performing artists, events and parties that positively shaped our opinions and understanding of music’s impact in the world. I have always loved different kinds of music: R&B, Soul, Classical, Rock, Jazz, and Gospel. I wanted to become an actress and a singer. From elementary school through college, as a First Alto, I enjoyed singing in glee clubs, choruses, and choirs. One of my favorite mentors, a classically trained actress and singer, was quite successful on stage in theatres and television, and she strongly discouraged me from pursuing acting and singing. She frankly told me that the economic struggles were too many, and the path was much too uncertain. Instead, she advised me to get a good college education, and to identify a more financially stable, potentially lucrative career choice.

Glad I listened to her advice and the other marvelous mentors in my life who echoed her recommendations. Their wise counsel helped me discover and acknowledge my passion and my purpose as an educator. Nevertheless, heartfelt, soul stirring singing, dancing and musical merriment will always be among the many joys experienced in my life.

Let’s enjoy the transformative power of music in all of its glory!
